It All Started During Grand Jury Duty…

Believe it or not, Oakley Js started while I was sitting in Grand Jury Duty.

At the time, I had decided I wanted to start doing live auctions on Whatnot, selling mini football helmets and other collectibles. I needed an LLC to get everything rolling, so in between cases, I started filling out the paperwork.

A little while later, Oakley Js LLC was official.

There wasn’t some elaborate business plan or lifelong dream of getting into the apparel industry. Actually, apparel wasn’t even part of the plan.

One Thing Led to Another…

The Whatnot auctions took off, and things were going really well. As we grew, I bought a Cricut machine so I could start cutting logos and customizing some of the helmets we were selling.

Then came the night that unknowingly changed the direction of the entire business.

We had an AWESOME night selling on Whatnot. I was pumped and decided I wanted to have a few Oakley Js shirts made with our logo on them.

Then I got the price.

There was no way I wanted to spend that much money for just a handful of shirts.

So, naturally, I started researching.

The further down the rabbit hole I went, the more I realized something: I could make these shirts myself for way less—and use better-quality shirts while doing it.

Challenge accepted.

I learned how to make our own apparel, started buying equipment and supplies, and before I knew it, something that started because I didn't want to overpay for a few company shirts was becoming an entirely new side of the business.

And Then Came the Hats…

Anyone who knows me knows I love hats.

My wife, Joni, might use the word obsession.

Eventually, I started wondering if I could make my own patched hats, too.

Back down the rabbit hole I went.

I figured out the process, bought a laser, started making patches and building hats—and absolutely loved it.

That was when everything started clicking.

I realized the future of Oakley Js wasn't mini football helmets.

It was apparel.

Hats became shirts. Shirts became hoodies. Then came spirit wear, embroidery, custom designs, tumblers, team apparel, business apparel, hat bars and more.

What started almost accidentally had turned into something I genuinely loved building.

But There's a Bigger Reason Behind It

The goal for Oakley Js today is about much more than selling shirts and hats.

Joni and I are originally from Hornell, New York, and we moved to Canisteo in 2021. In 2022, we welcomed our son, Oakley, and in 2025, our daughter, Hailey, joined the family.

Both have been incredible blessings—and they're a huge part of why I'm building this.

Oakley and I are already avid gearheads. If it has a motor, chances are we're interested in it.

Joni is a die-hard I Love Lucy fan and has one of the biggest hearts you'll ever find when it comes to animals—especially dogs. And when I say she loves animals, I mean she is an absolute nut about them.

Then there's Little Miss Haley Mae.

She's currently an avid screamer and believes she needs to be vocally involved in EVERYTHING happening around her. Give her some Ms. Rachel and pretty much any kind of food, though, and she's a happy girl.

Rounding out the Potter household are our two dogs, Bentley and Buddy, and our two cats, Spooks and Jasper.

It's a busy house—and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Building Something for Them

That's really what Oakley Js has become for me.

I want to build something sustainable.

Something that isn't just a side hustle.

Something I can someday hand down to my kids if they want it.

And hopefully, something that eventually allows me to spend more time being their dad instead of spending 40+ hours every week working for someone else.

Do I still work that 40-hour-a-week job? Absolutely.

And realistically, I probably will for quite a while.

But every shirt we make, every hat we press, every order that goes out the door and every new customer who gives Oakley Js a chance moves us a little closer to that goal.

We didn't start as an apparel company.

We kind of fell into it.

But somewhere along the way, I realized we'd found what Oakley Js was supposed to be.

Today, we're continuing to learn, adding new equipment, expanding what we can offer and trying things that probably would've sounded crazy when I was sitting in Grand Jury Duty filling out LLC paperwork.

And we're just getting started.
